What is a Banner?

A banner is a piece of digital advertising that mixes images, text and sometimes interactive content such as audio and animation, this is included in web pages to make the image of a company or campaign more attractive and visible. Usually the banner aims to invite the user to interact through a click that will direct the person to a promotional page.

Banners are one of the most used elements for the monetization of a web page through advertising, which is why it is usual to see them on portals with high traffic or that are specialized in some specific content.

It is a format with a horizontal orientation, and it is commonly the most used. On many occasions this type of banner is located in the upper third of the page.

There are three types:

  • The megabanner: This can have more than 900 x 90 pixels.
  • The standard banner: This can be 468 x 60 pixels
  • The middle banner: This can be 234 x 60 or 234 x 90 pixels.

This banner has a rectangular format with a vertical orientation and is usually located in the side columns of a web page. Its size is 100 x 600 or 120 x 700 pixels.

These have similar formats, but have the ability to expand on the screen so that they occupy a large part of it, this option varies depending on the medium where the banner is located. Typically, this type of part is displayed when hovering the mouse pointer or entering the site. Being so invasive, it must have a close button visible enough for the user, this is recommended by the IAB.

This banner fills the entire browser screen. Its effectiveness is of a very high percentage since it captures the user’s attention immediately, but being such an invasive format it is recommended to give it a controlled use.

This format contains an animated image in constant movement on the content of the page, and although it has great results when trying to attract attention and generate CTR, it is highly intrusive and must be handled in a moderate way.
